Description: Since I was little, I've puzzled to varying degrees over how the tops of clouds become positive and the bottoms become negative, which ultimately causes lightning. The best explanation I'd extracted from anyone had been, "Maybe the bits that become negative are heavier since they have extra electrons." Those of us familiar with the force of gravity compared to electrostatic forces should be able to dismiss that one... But I did a little research, and I'm hoping to share that with you here.
